James Preston Friend
served his country in two American wars: Spanish American War from 1898 - 1902
(photo on left of him, sitting, with a friend, standing) and World War I from
1914 - 1918 (photo on right of him in his WWI uniform). He also served in the
Philippines during the Philippine Insurrection. He was able to speak eight
languages, including Spanish and many of the Far East native tongues such as
Chinese and Japanese; of those eight languages, he was able to write in seven of
them fluently. With this kind of talent he served as an interpreter for the
President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt, and the U.S. Army.
James was married
twice. His first marriage was to a Filipino of Spanish descent named Victoria.
They had six
children: one son, Horace, and five daughters-Cerila, Lazarora, Romana,
Addie, and Amanda. Their son had four sons
(The
picture on the left shows the grandsons of James Preston Friend).
Later in life, James
returned to the United States and married his second wife, Suzana Dixon of
Letcher County, Kentucky. (photo
on the right) Suzana was the daughter of Henry M. Dixon and Elizabeth (Caudill) Dixon. They had five sons and one daughter: Felix Randal, Henry "Pierce" Pierceable, Charles Wesley, Lewis Jacob, William "Bill" Lee, and Margie Mae Friend. Anna (Dixon) Friend later married Moses Howard sometime after her husband, James Preston Friend, died in 1943.
Here is James and Anna's young family before 1940's (photo in the middle). From the back row left to right:
