National Headquarters


While our members come from all over America, Canada and England, our National Headquarters is located at the intersection of First & Maple Streets in Friendsville, Maryland.

It is housed in the old Bank building and it is the home of the Colonel Lester D. Friend, Sr. Historical Library, the Family Heritage Museum and store described elsewhere on this page.

“Sundays at Two” Genealogy Talks and Storytelling Series (2:00 pm – 4:00 pm) 

  • July 9 and July 16: Grandparents and Grandchildren Working Together on Their Family Tree Research (Hands on activity with grandparents and their grandchildren)
  • September 17: An Ode to Grandma’s Apron and Its Many Uses – From Carrying Eggs to Drying Tears


Sunday Tours to Friendsville Area Historic Sites (1:00 pm – 4:30 pm)

  • August 6: Blooming Rose Area:  On the high tableland looking down from the west side of the Yougheogany River is Blooming Rose, the first agricultural community in what is now Garrett County and the location of the oldest Catholic Mission and Church in Garrett County, St. Mary’s that served Catholic families in the area, including a dozen or more Indian communicants (This is the only record of Indian Christians in Garrett County).  The tour will begin at Blooming Rose United Methodist Church and the Church Cemetery and include a brief history of the area, its structures and sites, and some of its early settlers – Halls, Bevans, Jamieson, Edwards, Sisler, Smith, Friend, Markley, and Meshach Browning and his young wife Mary McMullen Browning who settled there after their marriage in 1799.
  • TBA: The Mills of Mill Run:  At one time two flour mills, seven saw mills, and one woolen factory bustled along Bear Camp Run, which later became known as Mill Run.  Today there is very little evidence of these businesses.  The tour will begin at the site where the once stood Speelman’s Mill which was erected to accommodate the flourishing timber industry in the Mill Run area, and include a brief history of the village of Mill Run and its people, mills, and other structures.

Our facility is completely staffed by volunteers. Our hours are subject to change depending on the availability of these volunteers. If you are traveling any distance, please call ahead to make sure we are open.


Colonel Lester D. Friend, Sr. Historical Library

Named in honor of our founder, the library is located on the second floor of the Headquarters building, it is equipped with historical and genealogical material primarily related to the Friend and related families. The library is NOT a lending facility, and its resources must be used on site. Genealogical research is available at a small fee – for further information, contact the Librarian.

Family Heritage Museum

Located on the first floor of the Headquarters building, the museum depicts a history of early life in the United States, the history of Western Maryland, and life of the early settlers in this country.


Our National Headquarters is located in Northern Garrett County, Maryland at Route 68, exit 4. Garrett County is the western most county in Maryland.
