John Friend Sr.
of Friendsville, MD

“John Friend Sr. of Friendsville, MD”

by Pat (Friend) Thompson

We are pleased to announce the next book in our series on the Friend Family.  “John Friend Sr. of Friendsville, MD” by Pat (Friend) Thompson focuses on the patriarch of the Friend Family in Garrett County, and the founder of Friendsville MD.  This marks the first major work about “Old John” and his descendents since Evelyn G. Olsen’s “Indian Blood” (1967). This material, gathered over a twelve year period, is an attempt to assemble and correlate the vast amounts of information concerning John Friend Sr. and his descendents. The primary goal of this work is to preserve the Old John’ history and that of his family before it is lost to time. This book catalogues the pedigree of John Friend Sr. and will be presented in an outline format.  The text includes transcriptions of family pedigrees, Bible records, land deeds, US Census data, death certificates and military records. Several hundred photographs (comprised of people, places, US Census images, maps, Civil War pension papers and gravestone images) have also been incorporated into the book. Because of the enormous volume of information, two of John Sr.’s sons (John Jr. and Joseph) will be featured in the future books.  John Jr. and Joseph Friend, as well as their descendents, are briefly outlined in this book.  This very large reference book is comprised of 446 pages, fully indexed and presented in an outline format.  Pat Thompson has made every attempt to accurately convey the life of John Friend Sr. and family. The author openly welcomes and encourages any additions and/or corrections to this information. Pat Thompson can be contacted through the Friend Family Association of America (FFAA) at Friendsville, MD or by e-mail through the FFAA web-site (www.friendfamilyassociation.com).

The initial cost of printing the book has been donated to the FFAA.  Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the FFAA, which is a non profit organization, so all sales are tax deductible. Each book in the initial offering will be signed by the author.  Black and white spiral bound copies can be purchased for $45 (plus $10 S&H) as well as a CD at $20 (plus $5 S&H).  The CD contains a color copy of the book in a PDF format (requiring Acrobat 7.0).  Earlier versions of Acrobat can open the text, but not all the images.

Credit card purchases can be made by using Pay Pal at the FFAA web-site.

Orders paid by check (made payable to the FFAA) should be sent to:
